Mental Health Updates 2009, June 8th
This program is designed to review state-of-the-art information for Healthcare Professionals on the management of mental health disorders with a focus on fear and anxiety and on bipolar disorders including new thinking on their pharmacologic treatment. The importance of a patient-centered, culturally sensitive, multi-disciplinary approach is also emphasized. The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) approach to mental health is at the core of a paradigm shift in which the standard of mental health care calls for a more holistic individualized approach. Through didactic lectures, case discussions, and interactive sessions, participants will have the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty and have personal interactions with leaders in Mental Health. 2008

New Diabetes focus in 2009 will mean more coordinated, comprehensive care and access to research for patients
Rapid Rise i
n diabetes spurs HMSDC and DHFMR to make it their 2009 focus for medical treatment and research. In the UAE, 25% of the population live with diabetes, while a similar percent of population is at risk of developing it. This year, the UAE ranked second highest worldwide for diabetes prevalence, followed by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait (International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 2007).

HMSDC and Dubai Healthcare City jointly host regions first Conference on Ethical Standards on Research The conference aimed to disseminate the understanding amongst those who participate in research or are involved in its regulation. This educational initiative was one of many to follow as part of a series of events organized by the Department of Research at HMSDC and DHCC.

A two day Conference on Practi-Med: Critical Care was held from 31 October to 1 November at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai
The program included latest information on diagnosis and treatment of the most common issues seen in emergency and critical care settings and are divided into: Sepsis, sedation, trauma, mechanical ventilation, neurological intensive care and implementation of quality in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Regional Specialists to Participate in One-Day Course in Dubai on Obstetric and Neonatal Care
The conference consisted of sessions on latest developments in obstetrics care, emergencies in neonatal delivery and neonatal care in cases of infections and requirement of respiratory support

Harvard Medical School Dubai Center and University Hospital Marked the International Nurses Day with One-Day CPD Conference
HMSDC and University Hospital held a one day conference to promote improved standards for nursing in the region. The Conference was held at Grand Hyatt on May 16, 2008.

Over 370 nurses attended a two day initiative promoting the quality of nursing in the region

Layla Salem Albraiki has completed a medical librarian fellowship under the auspices of the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research and the Maktoum Harvard Medical Library.

Harvard Medical School Dubai Center breaks ground on state-of-the-art educational facility
The Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) has broken ground on a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as its permanent home. The new building, scheduled for completion by the end of 2007, is a major step forward in efforts to make Dubai a center of excellence for postgraduate medical education and life sciences research.

HMSDC hosts women’s health program in Dubai
In December, HMSDC presented Specialty Practi-Med: Women’s Health Throughout the Life Cycle, a two-day continuing medical education (CME) conference in Dubai attended by approximately 160 gynecologists, obstetricians, nurses, and general practitioners from the Gulf Region.
